1938
I was born on the 20th of January 1938 at
Manygates hospital at Sandall, Wakefield,
West Riding of Yorkshire. I was
christened Melvin Douglas Shaw. My Father
was Douglas Shaw and my mother was Nora
Kathleen Brocklesby. I have a brother
called Trevor and a sister called Elaine.

My family tree is made up of the Shaw
family (Staveley, Derbyshire), the
Brocklesby and Locking families (North
East Lincolnshire - back to the 1600s),
the Little family (Carlisle, Cumberland -
back to the 1700s) and the Blackburn
family (Royston, Barnsley).

I started school at Royston National
School and then Royston Secondary Modern.

1951
I went on a school holiday to Keswick in
the Lake District.

1951
I was runner up in Barnsley
Schools' Boxing Association's
Annual Tournament. In the 6st
10lbs - 7st 3lbs (13-14 years)

In the late 1950s
and early 1960s I cycled toured around
Europe with Brenda Machen. The countries
we visited included France, Germany,
Switzerland, Italy and Spain.

1963
Married Brenda Machen at Carlton Church.

I left school and started work as an
apprentice motor mechanic at T. Lomas
auto engineers at Shafton garage. At 17 I
became a miner. Pits that I have worked
at include Wharncliffe Woodmoor 1,2 and
3, South Kirby. I then worked at Geoffrey
Diamonds and Greens foundry in Wakefield
before returning the mines at
Newmillerdam Colliery. I left the mining
industry and worked at Subaseal. My last
place of employment was for BXL (a
plastic bag manufacturer) at Darton.

1973
I was placed 6th in the British
Best-All-Rounder Competition
promoted by the Road Time Trials Council
with an average speed of 24.408mph (over
50, 100 and 12 hours cycling).

I have four children: Julie, Graham,
Adrian and David. I have one grand-child:
Daisy Jean who is the daughter of Adrian
and his partner Sarah.

2003
Brenda and I celebrated our Ruby Wedding
Anniversary. Which we held at Royston
Methodist Church, Barnsley, South
Yorkshire. |
