Cycle Touring - Day Rides

CYCLE TOURING
DAY RIDES
END TO END
 On most Sundays between spring and winter I usually complete a ride of at least 100 miles. Here are a few of my favourite day and weekend rides. All completed on a touring bike with rear topbag and mudguards. All rides start and finish in Royston, Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

KETTLEWELL CIRCUIT: DAY RIDE - 143 MILES
This ride requires an early start, 5.45am, to get through Leeds before any traffic builds up. In Kettlewell we go up over Park Rash into Coverdale. We have a 15 minute break at the beck at the top of Coverdale and a break to fill up with fluid at Masham and Boroughbridge.

ROUTE:
Royston - Wakefield - Leeds - Otley - back road up to Bolton Bridge - Bolton Abbey - Barden Tower - back road up to Appletreewick - Hebden - Grassington - Conistone - Kettlewell - Park Rash - Coverdale Bridge [71 miles] - West Scrafton - East Witton - Jervaulx Abbey - Ellingstring - Masham - West Tanfield - Wath - Hutton Conyers - Sharow - Skelton - Boroughbridge - Whixley - Cattal - Tadcaster - Sherburn - Ferrybridge - Pontefract - Purston - Nostell - Wintersett - Royston.

In 2002 from Boroughbridge we headed over to York and across to Sutton on Derwent - Cawood - Royston which gave a total of 170 miles.
LEAVENING CIRCUIT: DAY RIDE - 135 MILES
ROUTE:
Royston - Nostell - Pontefract - South Milford - Cawood - Naburn - Dunnington - Gate Helmsley - Sand Hutton - Bossall - Crambe - Kirkham Abbey - Westow - Leavening - Thixendale - Huggate - Millington - Kilnwick Percy - Warter - Nunburnholme - Burnby - Hayton - Bielby - Seaton Ross - Foggathorpe - Spaldington - Howden - Boothferry - Newland - Carlton Towers - Great Heck - Womersley - Darrington - East Hardwick - Wragby - Nostell - Wintersett - Royston.
HOUGH ON THE HILL CIRCUIT: DAY RIDE - 150 MILES
ROUTE:
Royston - Blyth - Barnby Moor - Green Mile Road - Ordsall - Stokeham - Dunham Bridge - Collingham - Stapleford - Beckingham - Fenton - Brandon - Hough On The Hill - Frieston - Caythorpe [halfway] - Brant Broughton - Stapleford - Norton Disney - Swinderby - North Scarle - Spalford - Dunham Bridge - Stokeham - Retford - Bawtry - Doncaster - Hooton Pagnell - Brierley - Royston.
WHITE HORSE: DAY RIDE - 140 MILES
ROUTE:
Royston - Nostell - Pontefract - Tadcaster [supermarket] - Cattal - Whixley - Little Ouseburn [tap in churchyard] - Aldwark Bridge - Aldwark - Flawith - Tholthorpe - Raskelf - Husthwaite - Coxwold - Kilburn - White Horse climb - Sutton Bank [60 miles] turn off towards Hawnby - up through Hawnby village and join B1257 - down into Rievaulx - Helmsley - Oswaldkirk - Brandsby - Sutton on the Forest - Bumper Castle - Acomb - Askham Bryan - Catterton - Tadcaster - Sherbun - Ferrybridge - Pontefract - Nostell - Royston.
CARROCK FELL: WEEKEND RIDE - 125 & 136 MILES
This weekend ride included an overnight stay at Carrock Fell Youth Hostel (which is now closed). The touring bikes and saddlebag used weighed 37.5lbs. It was 125 miles up and 136 miles back. The return leg taking in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales and took over 10 hours of riding. On one occasion we set off back from Carrock Fell at 8.30am in heavy rain and into a head wind. We had 3 punctures, and arrived home in Royston at 10.45pm.


DAY 1 ROUTE:
Royston - Bradford - Gargrave - Hellifield - Ingleton - Kirkby Lonsdale - Kendal - Windermere - Grasmere - Threlkeld - Mungrisdale - Carrock Fell.

DAY 2 ROUTE:
Carrock Fell - Troutbeck - Glenridding - Kirkstone Pass - Windermere - Staveley - Burneside - Kendal - Sedburgh - Garsdale - Hawes - Fleet Moss - Buckden - Kettlewell - Conistone - Grassington - Appletreewick - Bolton Bridge - back road down to Otley - Leeds [using cycle lanes] - Wakefield - Royston.
WHITBY: WEEKEND RIDE - 130 & 110 MILES
This weekend ride takes in an overnight stay at Whitby Youth Hostel. Going up takes 10 hours (including stops), while the return takes around 8 hours, on touring bikes with saddlebags and mudguards.

DAY 1 ROUTE:
Royston - Nostell - Pontefract - Tadcaster - Cattal - Whixley - Little Ouseburn - Aldwark Bridge - Aldwark - Flawith - Tholthorpe - Raskelf - Husthwaite - Coxwold - Kilburn - White Horse climb - Sutton Bank [60 miles] turn off towards Hawnby - up through Hawnby village - Chop Gate - Ingleby Greenhow - Battersby - Kildale - Westerdale - Castleton - Moorsholm - Liverton - Loftus - Dalehouse - Scaling Dam - Danby - Ainthorpe - Lealholm Side - Stonegate - Sandsend - Whitby.
Mileage: 128 miles

DAY 2 ROUTE: Whitby - Sneatonthorpe - Littlebeck - Beck Hole - Goathland - Egton Bridge - Delves - Rosedale Abbey - Rosedale Chimney - Hutton Le Hole - Great Barugh - Barton Le Street - Castle Howard - Bossall - Sand Hutton - Gate Helmsley - Dunnington - Naburn - Cawood - Thorpe Willoughby - Gateforth - Birkin - Beal - Darrington - East Hardwick - Nostell - Royston.
Mileage: 110 miles
HORNSEA AND THE WOLDS - 150 MILES
Royston - Snaith - Howden - North Cave - Beverley - Hornsea - Beverley - South Dalton - North Dalton - Huggate - Millington - Kilnwick Percy - Pocklington - Sutton on Derwent - Selby - Pontefract - Royston.
OTHER RIDES
I have ridden to Grasmere and back in a day many times when training for the 12 hour. I have also cycled down to Cardiff in one day several times, and sometimes back the next day.
