performance proposal - "the klee stick"
i want to install a piece called
'the klee stick'
(pieces of wood and a cd player)

statement of intent

klee was a master of digital thinking
klee was the painter who understood music well
bach was also a great digital thinker
and
bach and klee were allies
technololgy allows digital thinking in a most literal
way
i have used this technology for my latest piece to
manipulate sonic material that i have found in a
collection of second hand lp's tapes and cd's that i
have recently aquired

i have manipulted this sonic material
layered it maybe, in the geological sense, to create an
ocean of sound
a chaos machine
this ocean of sound will be produced in an enclosed
space
maybe concieved as a harbour
also in that space will be the 'klee stick'
this is a piece of drift wood
coloured with
klee paint
this stick is art
it once was tossed about in the ultimate chaos 'white
noise' machine, the ocean
now it will vibrate in this noise ocean
and i like this idea
(i'm happy for the stick...)
there are also other sticks that are attracted to it
and cling to it like suckling fish
there is also nonart stick which tries to attack the
klee stick use the chaotic force of the ocean
this stick is a friend of the chaotic ocean
there is also an artists colony
where fishermen artists stare out at the klee stick
and watch the drama unfold
and listen very actively to the
bach ocean

performance proposal - "i am a robin"
i am a musician
and a writer
performer
i am thinking about birdsong
i want to do something with bird sounds
i love robins
maybe call the piece 'i am a robin'
explore the concept of becoming-robin
becoming in the
deleuzian sense
exploring the difference between a musician bird
and a non musician bird
exploring the biological mechanics of bird sound
it's mating calls
use spoken words through a digitally created robin
voice
vibrate my bones with the robin sounds
vibrate my jawbone
recall all my robin sightings over the last few years
(i can remember them all)
produce a digital flock
a digital swarm of robins
singing robins
they never swarm but i want to make them swarm
produce a swarm of robins
i want to experiment with sound to think through
a robin-becoming

liverpool biennial - a proposal
i want to open up a centre of creativity.
i will give it a name just to make things easier but its name isn’t of much importance.
maybe i will call it
‘the rodney street centre for creative thinking’.
or the
‘marshak centre of creativity’.
with a slogan something like ‘to think is to create, to create is to resist’.
although I hate slogans.
and what are we resisting? who knows.
i have asked mr
harry pye to help.
we can work together.
the centre will not be thought of as a hub.
i hate hubs.
especially hubs of activity.
we will not be a centre of anything.
but instead we will be around.
in and out of this festival I hope.
just wandering around.
on the lookout, so to speak.
of course this leads to confusion.
creation needs its parameters.
so we will need to draw a circle.
trace out an irregular contour.
we will need a base.
i want to be on the end of a telephone.
for the course of a week or so i want to set up an 'arts help-line'.
like the samaritan’s.
called ‘the artsline’, maybe.
we will be open round the clock to discuss art.
our door will also be open.
may be there should be a theme.
areas of discussion.
such as ‘can an art object exist in and of itself, in the absence of man?’.
but it doesn’t matter that much about themes.
or maybe ‘art as event’, i like this.
i want to set up a day long symposium.
this could be its title...
‘art as event’.
i will invite artists and writers.
at some point i would like to openly and honestly say ‘yes, i really like this’.
(but it doesn’t matter who i am)
i want to be on a local radio talk show and say what i like.
i would like to set up a local radio station.
our own station broadcasting live from our base.
whatever is going on inside.
all telephone conversations could be broadcast live.
we will plan a programme of performance events for a set period.
including a repeat of the 'raw' event, 'the everyday story of mervin', a
teenbeat and friends gig.
and other text/image performances i’ve done such as 'the birdy song'.
we will publish a zine of times, dates a la '
sick happy idle’.

performance proposal - "for a theme for a symposium"
haptic haptic
i would like to explore
deleuze and guattari notion of the
'haptic'
in 'smooth and the striated' from
atp
material
including sonic material can be manipulated
digital technology has allowed a literal understanding
and exploration of this
but it could be argued that
bach was already a digital
thinker
who could manipulate sonics
his music has the ability to remain an open system
creative
alive
a nonlinear system
self organising etc
a dream of digital manipulation maybe
but i dont belive in the notion of the cutting edge
most digital art/music is mediocre

i'm not interested in these boundaries
i think it's interesting to see how digital
'sonic art' (- all 'sonic art' seems to have to be
digital)
is trying to position itself some how in opposition to
the visual
this is all very silly
i think that's where the notion of the haptic is a
useful for navigating this area
in
thought movements invoked by sound
have their equivlalent the visual
klee can produce digital affects
so can
holbein

i would like to open up a discussion along these lines

short film - "you're my world"
we were on the m1 passing under a bridge. i was thinking about some one dropping concrete blocks on the passing cars.
i remembered that during the miner's strike a lump of concrete was dropped on what was thought to be a scab. people died.
there was an italian version of
you're my world on the radio.
i wanted to some how film a block of concrete falling.
in slow motion.
with this version of
you're my world as the sound track finishing at the point the concrete hits the windscreen.

installation - "go"
there are two rooms
they may be adjacent but i don't think it matters.
in one room is a
dansette on repeat playing he'll have to go - jim reeves.
the other room plays 'he'll have to stay'
a song written from the point of view of the woman on the other end of the phone.
i can't remember the woman singers name -
jeanne black.

photographs - exhibition
i have over 1ooo photographs as yet undeveloped.
they were taken over the last 5 years, i've no idea what they are of.
i will develop locally them and stick them on a wall.
the exhibition will be called '
adrian r shaw: recently developed photographs'.
